Simple Present Tense - Spelling Rules

What do you do on Sundays?

Funny question. I usually go out with family to the beach or I sometimes stay home and read my favorite book. Most of my Sundays are for me to relax but I love hanging around with the people I love.

Hello everyone, Today's topic is Simple Present Tense also known as Present Simple and it is one of the most used tenses for English speakers. We need to know that we use Simple Present in different scenarios:

1. To talk about general things: The sky is blue. I love rainy days.

2. To talk about present actions happening one after another: Today, I wake up late, I think later I will do the shopping.

3. To talk about descriptions and schedules: My brother has a tall girlfriend. They go out every Sunday night.

It is common to use frequency words with this tense. Do you know them? I believe you do, so let's remember them:

Frequency words
- Always
- Sometimes
- Often
- Rarely
- Hardly ever
- Never
- Once a week
- Twice a month
- Every other day

Their position goes after the subject and when using the verb to be after it too, for example:

I always do my homework.
She is often smiling.

Some people, especially ESL, find this topic challenging as they need to put a extra -s, -es, or -ies to the verb when using third person. Remember also that the personal pronouns he, she and it substitute names but words like: family, everybody, team, army, everyone, that, this are also singular and therefore you need to add apply the rule of the 3rd person to the verb. For example:

  • My family goes to the beach every summer.
  • Everybody likes cats.
  • My teams always wins the tournaments.
  • That affects our point of view.
  • This has to be reviewed.
